An Instructional Coach is responsible for ensuring highly effective instruction at the school level. This position fills the need for job embedded professional development and instructional improvement. Through frequent observation of teachers, the Coach will provide professional support and feedback in a non-evaluative context that is intended to foster effective practices within the classroom. The Coach may also be responsible for leading professional development sessions related to pedagogy.


• 4 or more years’ High School teaching experience preferred

• Bachelors’ degree required, masters’ degree in instruction or educational leadership preferred

• Must maintain either a valid Michigan teaching certificate or a valid Michigan administrator certificate

• Experience as an Instructional Coach preferred

• Demonstrated experience facilitating professional development and improving the quality of instructional practices for individual teachers

• Proven success at implementing exceptional instructional practices in the subject area or at the grade level assigned

• Leadership ability and the capacity to galvanize and motivate others to move towards achieving a common goal

• Strong communication skills and ability to provide constructive feedback in a supportive manner that encourages teachers to take risks and improve instructional practices

• The belief that all children can learn at high levels when given the appropriate support and opportunity

• Tenacious about reaching professional goals and a willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure students are successful

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provides direct support to teachers and grade-level teams on effective unit and lesson planning through modeling and sharing of effective practices

• Conducts informal classroom observations, providing feedback to teachers on needed areas of improvement based on planning and delivery of lesson

• Assists with development of action plans and implementation strategies for improving student achievement in response to assessment data

• Ensures effective use of assessment data in lesson planning

• Participates in all school leadership team meetings

• Works with school and district leadership to develop professional development programs that address the instructional needs of the school’s faculty

• Displays the highest ethical and professional standards of behavior;Serves as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic

• Protects confidentiality of student and staff records and information, using discretion when sharing any such information within legal confines

• Adheres to federal statutes and regulations, Michigan school law, State Board of Education rules and regulations, PSAD Board of Education and Detroit 90/90 policies and procedures, and contractual obligations

• Performs any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the position’s supervisor or building principal, and not otherwise prohibited by law or regulation
