Managing Director of Administrative Services

Summary:

The Managing Director of Administrative Service will assist the CEO to ensure we substantially and effectively support our network's mission and vision to deliver a high-quality educational experience for scholars. Expectations of this role are to develop, achieve, and maintain systematic support across the organization, as well as remove barriers and eliminate inefficiencies across four areas of supervision. The Managing Director of Administrative Service supervises the Executive Directors of Finance and Marketing/Development as well as Directors of Information Technology and Human Resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serves as an integral member of the Executive Leadership Team;
  • Plans, directs, controls, and coordinates duties and responsibilities for support services; establishes and monitors controls to evaluate department leaders’ performance; ensures execution of goals and objectives; takes appropriate actions to correct performance and to adjust programs and responsibilities as needed;
  • Oversees and directs the development of department policies and procedures;
  • Oversees department-related audits and ensures correction of any audit findings as reported;
  • Directs the preparation of the annual Detroit 90/90 budget; monitors the department budget; advises on budget and costs to other departments;
  • Ensures the districts are adequately funded to support their annual operations; supports the Executive Director of Finance in maintaining effective working relationships with federal, state, and financial institutions to ensure funding is available and adequate; provides recommendations to the Board of Directors for short-term borrowing as may be necessary;
  • Reviews all financial reporting to the applicable Board of Directors; analyzes financial information for planning and recommendations to the CEO and Board of Directors;
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable policies, rules, regulations, and laws; stays abreast of legal, regulatory, and policy changes affecting applicable areas of Central Management responsibility;
  • Manages positions and personnel to make best use of employees; selects employees and develops their capabilities; directs work of subordinates; reviews employees' work for effectiveness in meeting goals, standards, and schedules;
  • Establishes department goals in support of the network of schools’ goals and objectives; establishes schedules and work standards to achieve goals and ensures their effective implementation; and,
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor's degree with equivalent work experience required; Master's degree in a related field strongly preferred. 
  • Ten or more years of support services leadership experience, preferably in CMO, school district or high functioning social sector organization with success overseeing many of the following functional areas: finance, procurement, information technology, and human resources.
  • A track record of managing and leading teams in diverse functional areas, a team builder who has experience and people skills in a multi-site environment, capacity to enforce accountability, develop and empower talent and learn the strengths and weaknesses of the team to put people in a position to succeed;
  • Exceptional systems and process orientation and experience with overseeing the design complex and scalable systems/processes from scratch and improving upon existing ones;
  • Record of achieving results, ability to establish meaningful metrics to support data driven decisions to shape vision and strategy;
  • Ability to develop, implement and effect change in operational procedures, policies and organizational structure;
  • Must have ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, including the ability to make effective presentations;
  • Demonstration of ability to interact effectively with leadership team, school leaders, and board members;
  • Computer proficiency and strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google and Windows Platforms are essential. 

Qualifications and Competencies
